Illustrating PoTS : an invisible illness affecting
mainly young women at the prime of their lives.
Postural Tachycardia syndrome (PoTS) falls under the umbrella term ‘Dysautonomia’, which describes a dysfunctional autonomic nervous system. The nervous system controls all of the things our bodies do without conscious thought or effort, such as our heart rate, blood pressure and breathing. In PoTS, damage to this system results in a plethora of perplexing symptoms relating to the heart and brain, specifically when standing. Although not life threatening, it is certainly life altering. More research is needed to gain insight into the mechanisms of this syndrome, to develop better treatments for those suffering, and ultimately, to find a cure.
